FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions: List of frequently asked questions and appropriate replies on a specific topic.

Firewall

Technology in the form of hardware and/or software that checks the data flow between a private and an unprotected network (also LAN and Internet) or protects an internal network against assaults from the Internet. To do so, a Firewall compares, e.g. the IP address of the computer from which a received data package originates with a list of allowed senders - only their data is allowed to pass. Frequently, uncertainty arises with regard to the expressions "Proxy" and "Firewall". A firewall is - as described - a protective measure of the provider or Intranet administrator against system attacks from outside. It involves a whole bundle of measures and technologies. A proxy is not a Firewall itself, but can be part of a firewall.

FIX (Financial Information eXchange Protocol)

The messaging standard for the real-time electronic exchange of securities information.

FTP

Stands for "File Transfer Protocol". At the same time, in addition to the protocol that is based on TCP, "FTP" also describes the INTERNET service that is realized with the protocol - namely the transmission of files between different computers over the network. Shareware and public domain programs throughout the world can be reached via FTP, e.g. the FTP server of Heidelberg University. If someone does not know on which FTP server a program is located, he can search for it using Archie or one of the search engines.
